What are Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens. Our lens is naturally in order to allow light rays to pass through to the retina and refract when they the optic nerve. When the lens turns cloudy and blocks the rays from getting through, our vision becomes blurry.

Are Cataracts Only Common in Older People?

Generally, cataracts are common in older people. However, young people can have cataracts as well. For instance, cataracts could form from birth in those whose mothers are contracted with Rubella during pregnancy. The babies will be born with congenital cataracts. Those who have eye injuries, especially on the lens, eye diseases such as Uveitis, eye infection, or retina surgeries have higher risks of premature cataracts.

Treatments for Cataracts

During the initial stage of Cataracts, patients can wear eyeglasses to alleviate the mild symptoms. However, as it worsens, and the eyeglasses may not be helpful, an eye surgery is a necessary treatment. Currently, there aren’t any medicines or vitamins that could treat this a Cataract.

Cataract Prevention

To prevent Cataracts, you can wear sunglasses. Those who are over 40 years old are suggested to get their eyes checked annually. If there are any eye problem, it can be treated in time.
